This 1946 historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). An industrial hygienist was using an air sampling flowmeter in order to sample the air in a welder’s breathing zone. Chemicals used in the welding process, and the metals themselves when superheated, produce a number of noxious gasses that can be inhaled by the workers, who need to be protected from the fumes. A welder also need to wear eye protection from the extremely bright light.
