This 1946 historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Here, a young industrial plant worker was at a grinding machine, inside a tungsten carbide machine shop. The worker was not wearing a facemask. Today’s workers are required to wear a protective mask, gloves, and eye protection, and to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking while in the machine shop environment, which could lead to the ingestion of dust contaminants.
