This 1946 historical photograph was provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The image depicted a man seated next to an exhaust ventilation device, inside a tungsten carbide machine shop. Unlike this man, today’s workers are warned to wear a protective mask and gloves, protect eyes from airborne dust contamination, and avoid eating, drinking, or smoking while in the machine shop environment, which could lead to the ingestion of dust contaminants.
