Caption:
Magnified 888X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the ultrastructural surface details of one of the very small flower buds clustered in the center of a white flowering dogwood blossom, Cornus florida. Due to the extremely small size of the centrally located clustered flowers, the larger colored bracts, which are actually modified leaves that protect the flowers themselves, are also mistaken for flower petals.
