Under a magnification of 1891X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the morphologic ultrastructural details adorning the surface of a bract from a flowering dogwood blossom, Cornus florida. Under this magnified scrutiny, what initially appeared to be a smooth, faintly textured surface, was actually a highly complex surface structure. The specimen, from which these micrographic images were obtained, was found on the grounds of the Decatur, Georgia suburbs in the month of April. The floral elements seem to bud from newly developing branches. In the Decatur area, the dogwood trees are quite abundant, some displaying white bracts, while others displaying bracts of pink.
