Magnified 99X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image revealed some of the morphologic ultrastructure found amongst a collection of pollen contained within the dehisced, or ruptured, anther of a yellow sundrops, Oenothera fruticosa flower. Amongst this grouping were pollen grains representing various stages of drying, through which these pollen grains pass as they mature. The drying of the grains changes their shape, appearing more elliptical, and less circular. Housed inside each flower, the anther produces pollen through a process known as meiosis, which involves cell division that gives rise to a half complement of chromosomes, known as haploidy.
