This photomicrograph was captured during a child’s autopsy, and depicts the exposure of the thoracoabdominal organs, and in so doing, revealed the pathologic changes manifested in a case of neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis. Note the ensuing abdominal distension, intestinal necrosis and hemorrhage, and peritonitis due to an intestinal perforation.
