This historic 1908 photograph revealed some of the former problems found inside what was a typical unsanitary milk house. In this case, the image depicted children who’d been entrusted with the important work of sanitizing milk bottles. The point of the image, and its description, was to bring to light, the public endangerment brought on by the efforts to reduce costs, by using unskilled labor, which turned out to be counter-productive when the producer’s milk was shown to be contaminated. The descriptive information that accompanied the photograph referred to a governmental publication that dealt with this topic. The specific citation was, “U.S. Public Health Service, Milk and its Relation to the Public Health, Hygienic Laboratory Bulletin, no. 41. 1908, Figure 32”. This was one of a series of instructional images used by the Minnesota Board of Health to train its public health workers.
