Produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 1997, and entitled, Geographic Distribution of Human Ehrlichioses in the United States, this map of the United States illustrates in what states ehrlichiosis has occurred. It further breaks down the occurrences, by which form of the disease was present. Blue states representing the human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE), green states representing the human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), and red states representing both the HGE and HME forms of the disease. HGE is now known as human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), and is caused by the bacterium, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, formerly Ehrlichia phagocytophilum. HME is caused by the bacterium, Ehrlichia chaffeensis.
