This was a 1994 photographic portrait of Marian Wright Edelman. Mrs. Edelman delivered the annual Joseph W. Mountin Lecture on September 7, 1994. She is the founder, and president of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF), and the first black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar, beginning her career, by directing the NAACP Legal Defense Fund office.
