This 1989 photograph depicted Vernon N. Houk, MD (left), former Director of the Center for Environmental Health at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), as he was greeting Ben Jones (D-GA), a former Georgia Congressional Representative during the Congressman’s visit to the CDC. Dr. Houk was an Assistant Surgeon General for the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), and a former Director of the National Center for Environmental Health and Injury Control at the CDC. In the background you’ll note the sculptural bust of the Greek Goddess of Health, Hygeia, which is still located at the CDC headquarters.
