This 1993 photograph showed Deborah Mathis (left), who at the time was the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Assistant Director for Management and Operations for the former Public Health Practice Program Office (PHPPO), and Dr. William L. Roper (right), former Director of the CDC (1990–1993), as they were presenting an award to Dennis McDowell, former Director of the Division of Professional Development and Evaluation (DPDE). Throughout his 30+ years at the CDC, Dennis McDowell has distinguished himself by working with universities and professional organizations at the local, state, and federal levels of public health service, thereby, forging alliances, and improving public health practice. Through Mr. McDowell’s leadership and vision, he helped to develop a technology-supported distance learning system that supports the ever-changing educational needs of the professional health care, and emergency response community.
