This historic 1993 photograph shows Dr. Jonathan Richmond (left), who at the time was the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s former Office of Health and Safety, as he was receiving a CDC Achievement Award from Dr. David Taylor of the Office of Health and Safety as well. Dr. Richmond, was an international authority on biosafety and laboratory containment design, and was trained as a geneticist. He also had worked for ten years as a research virologist. After retiring from the CDC, Dr. Richmond remained involved in the field of laboratory biosafety.
