Description:With reporters and television cameras on hand, this 1993 photograph showed the Surgeon General, Dr. Joycelyn Elders (1993 – 1994) as she was addressing school children as to the dangers of smoking.
As stated in the 2004 Surgeon General’s report entitled “The Health Consequences of Smoking”, children and adolescents who smoke are less physically fit, and have more respiratory illnesses than their nonsmoking peers. In general, a smoker’s lung function declines faster that that of a nonsmoker. Also, smoking is related to impaired lung growth, chronic coughing, and wheezing.
