This April 5, 1977 photograph depicts former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director, William H. Foege, MD, MPH (left of center), while attending a reception, after just having been named CDC’s Director-Designate, by the former Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, (DHEW) Secretary, Joseph A. Califano.

Dr. Foege was CDC’s Director from 1977, until 1983. He was an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), Class of 1962 graduate, as well as the Director of the Global Smallpox Eradication Program from 1970, to 1973, as well as integral in formulating the strategies for eradicating smallpox from the world's population.
