This 2000 photograph, showed a worker, as he rough sanded a hardwood floor in a home in Madison, Wisconsin, in preparation of refinishing its lead-based varnished surface. In response to a management request, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) did a health hazard evaluation in order to assess exposures to lead and wood dust in homes, where lead-containing varnish (average 0.21%) was present. Worker exposures to low concentrations of lead, and hazardous wood dust were measured, and the findings indicated the presence of lead in settled dust in levels that justified how important it is to carry out a proper cleanup, so as to protect on-site occupants. Note the protective inhalation mask worn by this worker to avoid the inhalation of particulates, which could potentially contain lead, as well as earplugs, to protect his hearing from the constant load noise. See PHIL 7343 for another view of this indoor renovation activity.
