This 1999 image reveals lead paint scrapings on a floor, after having been removed by flame burning, demonstrating one way the lead contamination can result, when performing an exterior renovation method, typically used on residences where lead-based paint was present. The University of California, Berkeley, and local members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America conducted the demonstration. These organizations requested that industrial hygienists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), conduct a health hazard evaluation in order to assess workers’ lead exposures, inherent in performing various tasks.
