This worker was performing a dry manual scraping in a 1999 exercise, demonstrating an exterior renovation method that was typically used on residences, where lead-based paint was present. This was classified as use of a high-exposure renovation method. The University of California, Berkeley, and local members of the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America conducted the demonstration. These organizations requested that industrial hygienists at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), conduct a health hazard evaluation in order to assess workers’ lead exposures, inherent in performing various tasks. Dry scraping was found to be among those renovation methods, which exposed workers to high environmental lead levels.
