This image depicts a section of liver tissue, which had been harvested from a patient with alcoholic cirrhosis of the liver. Note how the cut surface of the liver displayed a diffuse pallor, due to a dense network of scar tissue, known as fibrosis, the first stage of liver scarring. Scarring had occurred in response to chronic injury from alcohol abuse.
