At the time of this historic photograph, Tongan Prince Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, who would soon to be King of Tonga, was shown here, as he received his smallpox vaccination at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), as the administrator, Ron Roberto, MD, used a Ped-O-Jet® jet injector to administer the vaccine. This image was captured during the worldwide Global Smallpox Eradication Campaign of the late 1960’s, and early 1970s, whereupon, a mass-vaccination program was instituted across the globe that lead to the declaration in 1978 by a global commission that smallpox had been eradicated, which was officially accepted by the 33rd World Health Assembly in 1980.
