This 1970 photograph taken in El Salvador, depicted a Center for Disease Control (CDC)-type light trap, which had enticed, and trapped a large number of adult mosquitoes that were then ready for processing. The CDC light trap utilizes CO2 as an added attractant in the form of dry ice, thereby, markedly increasing the number of mosquitoes trapped, than if implementing a light source alone. In 1962, the CDC light trap was created, which was far more portable than its predecessor, the New Jersey trap. It was equipped with a small fan that introduced a downward air current, forcing the attracted insects down into the trap, a white light bulb, both powered by a small battery, and a small quantity of dry ice, the entire trap weighed in at under two pounds.
