Captured in 1975, this photograph showed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) virologist, Frederick A. Murphy, DVM, PhD, as he was entering a Biosafety Level-4 (BSL-4) laboratory in order to examine specimens collected during the 1975 Marburg virus outbreak. This facility was used to determine the cause of numerous disease outbreaks throughout the world. It was here, for example, in 1969 that Lassa specimens from Nigeria, and in 1975 Marburg specimens from South Africa, were examined by CDC officials.
