This 1976 photograph shows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) staff member, Dr. Stan Foster (center), fastening a make-shift bottle anchor to the isolation unit of a suspected Ebola patient, Del Conn, who can be inside the unit, wearing a respirator. Mr. Conn became ill with Ebola-like symptoms, while working on the Yambuku survey effort. Worried that Conn was infected with the deadly virus, medical evacuation of the patient from Yambuku to South Africa was ordered. Evacuation of the patient took some time, for it was feared that such exposure of the newly discovered Ebola virus could facilitate its spread locally, as well as internationally.
