This late 1960s photograph, was captured inside a relief camp during the Nigerian-Biafran war, and depicted a gathering of children, and a nurse attendant, outside a orphanage. Notice four of the children with gray-blond hair, a symptom of the protein-deficiency disease kwashiorkor, known as flag sign. Kwashiorkor sufferers consume inadequate dietary protein, and show signs of edema, inadequate growth, and weight loss. These relief camps provided feeding wards where doctors from the National Communicable Disease Center (NCDC) were on call 24-hours a day, monitoring 100 or more, malnourished, stage-four kwashiorkor children.
