This image depicts a skeletal muscle tissue specimen, which had been harvested from a person with a fatal case of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), also known as pseudohypertrophic muscular dystrophy. This particular specimen was extracted from the patient’s gastrocnemius muscle. In this form of the disease, yellowish-white fat replaces normally reddish-brown skeletal muscle.
