This was the fifth of six images, captured during the 1975 Rhodesian, now Zimbabwean, Marburg fever outbreak, which depicted a staff member of the Infectious Disease Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa demonstrating the gowning procedure in the isolation ward. After donning his disposable blue gown, head coverings, and latex gloves, this clinician was now adding his protective facial goggles, protecting his eyes from contaminants. See PHIL 6600–6605, for the full complement of donning process imagery. In order to prevent the Marburg virus pathogen from spreading to other hospital staff members, who were involved in the treatment of afflicted patients, precautions were implemented, which included wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
