This was the fourth of six images, captured during the 1975 Rhodesian, now Zimbabwean, Marburg fever outbreak, which depicted a staff member of the Infectious Disease Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa demonstrating the gowning procedure in the isolation ward. After donning his disposable blue gown, and head coverings, this clinician was in the process of sliding his disposable latex gloves over his hands. In order to prevent the Marburg virus pathogen from spreading to other hospital staff members, who were involved in the treatment of afflicted patients, precautions were implemented, which included wearing personal protective equipment (PPE).
