This photomicrograph depicts what was a Gram-stained rectal smear specimen, revealing the presence of diplococcal, Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria. Gram-negative N. gonorrhoeae bacteria are quite often paired, hence the term diplococci. They are generally aerobic, but if environmental stresses deem it necessary, as facultative anaerobes, these bacteria can survive in a CO2-rich environment. Note the presence of a myriad of other cell types in the field of view.
