This image depicts an anterior view of a 7-year-old child’s face, which revealed the presence of a periocular herpes simplex virus (HSV) vesicular outbreak. This patient had a history of recurrent herpes labialis (HSV-1). HSV, sometimes referred to as Herpesvirus hominis, is a member of a group of viruses including those which cause oral herpes, and genital herpes. See PHIL 6492 for a closer view of this young patient's right eye.
