Under a magnification of 1719X, this scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image reveals the presence of numerous, Staphylococcus-like organisms, which were discovered on samples of wood collected from steam baths. During an epidemiologic investigation, samples of wood were removed from a sauna suspected of harboring methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria, responsible for a furunculosis outbreak in rural Alaska.
