This 1980 photograph depicts the children's ward of the Port Louis, Mauritius Civil Hospital, where typhoid patients were housed. An outbreak of typhoid fever occurred in Cite' Roche Bois, Mauritius, during January, 1980. This illness is caused by the bacterium, Salmonella typhi, which lives only in humans, who carry the bacteria in their bloodstream, and intestinal tract.
