This 1980 image depicts what was a typical water closet, and kitchen area, in Cite' Roche Bois, Mauritius. The water closet, or bathing area, was surrounded by unsanitary environmental conditions. Such factors surrounding a potable water supply can act to promote the spread of pathogens, including Salmonella typhi, responsible for the disease typhoid fever.
