Caption:
This image depicts the ankles of a man, who had rolled down the cuffs of his socks, revealing a number of erythematous papules, which had resulted after having been bitten by small biting flies, sometimes called biting midges, no-see-ums, or punkies. This case took place in Costa Rican Province of Guanacasta. Biting midges are extremely small biting flies, and members of the family Ceratopogonidae. Most recipients of a punkie bite merely are annoyed, but some produce an inflammatory response.
