As an adult, this Simulium sp., black fly larva, is a vector of the disease, onchocerciasis, commonly known as river blindness. The black fly larva is usually a filter feeder, feeding on nutrients extracted from passing currents. Prior to entering the pupal stage, a Simulium sp. larva passes through six larval stages, then encases itself in a silken, submerged cocoon.
