This image depicts the face of a young child, who had presented with a condition known as scorbutic tongue, which was due to what proved to be a vitamin C deficiency. The condition is related to scurvy, and involves an inflammation of the tongue, referred to as glossitis, which manifests as areas of erythema and petechial submucosal hemorrhages.
