Created in 1970, this photograph depicted an anterior view of an infant’s face, which exhibited symptoms indicative of kwashiorkor, a dietary protein deficiency, as well as a Vitamin B deficiency. Kwashiorkor involves an inadequate dietary protein intake, and produces symptoms including thinning hair, known as flag sign, edema, inadequate growth, and weight loss. Note this baby’s angular stomatitis, indicative of an accompanying vitamin B deficiency, as well. See PHIL 6188 for the appearance of this child in her healthy state, after receiving treatment for her condition.
