Description:This patient was exhibiting dermatitis of her hands, which is a symptom of pellagra due to a niacin deficiency.
Pellagra was first thought to be an infectious disease, but by 1916, new data had led to the discovery that food contained vitamins, and lack of "vital amines" could cause disease, resulting in public health policies such as food fortification programs.
