This image depicts a close intraoral view of a 36-year-old HIV/AIDS-positive patient, who had presented with a secondary opportunistic oral candidiasis infection. The immune system in suffers with HIV, undergoes a dramatic reduction in its effectiveness, resulting in the greater possibility of secondary infections, as in this example, where the intraoral Candida sp. organisms were no longer kept in check.
