This photograph depicts a dorsal view of an Ixodidae family hard tick of the genus, Haemaphysalis, identified by the lateral protrusion of its 2nd palpal segment. A tick’s mouthpart morphology is often used when determining the identification of one of these arthropods. In the case of Haemaphysalis hard ticks, the 2nd palpal segment reveals a proximal laterally protruding protuberance.
