Caption:
This 1970 photograph depicted a close view of a patient’s opened mouth, focusing on the upper lip, and revealing the presence of lesions at the angles of the lips, which is known as cheilosis, and is due to a vitamin B2 deficiency. With cheilosis, the lips become dry, scaly and swollen, and lesions develop at the corners of the mouth, as was the case here. The gums, or gingivae, become inflamed, and have a tendency to bleed easily.
