This photograph shows a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) employee reviewing CDC-published, Public Health Service (PHS) publication which highlighted the Surgeon General’s Report on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) information. The 1987 Understanding AIDS campaign, marked the first time the federal government had attempted to contact virtually every resident, directly by mail, regarding a major public health problem.
