Under a magnification of 13951X, this 2004 scanning electron microscopic (SEM) image reveals some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by two, Gram-negative, Helicobacter bilis, also known as Flexispira rappini bacteria. First described as Flexispira rappini, this bacterium was subsequently determined to be closely related to Helicobacter spp. The nameF. rappini is considered a provisional name, as it was never formally proposed, or accepted. Note the spiral, periplasmic fibers that wrapped these spindle-shaped bacteria, as well as their bipolar tufts of sheathed flagella.
