This 1968 image depicts Ghana’s former Regional Chieftain, Mampong Akwapim, Timi of Ede, with the United States Surgeon General at the time, Dr. William H. Stewart. This was a celebration honoring a Ghanaian child from that region, Rebecca Ansah Asamoah, the world’s 25-millionth smallpox vaccinee. In 1977, the last case of naturally-contracted smallpox was recorded in Somalia.
