This 1975 image depicted a water well, which at its base, had been surrounded by a pooling of excess water, indicating the improper height of the well slab, allowing for inadequate drainage. This pooling could cause contamination of the total well water supply. The slab, or well cover, must be higher than the surrounding ground, and slope away from the well in order to drain quickly. This photograph was part of a series used to inform, and educate public health inspectors, as to the proper protocols practiced when examining the sanitary conditions of water supplies they would encounter, and document in the field.
