This is a 1981 photograph showing a stream in Alabama where fish were discovered to be contaminated with the insecticide, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, more commonly referred to as DDT. First developed during the early stages of WWII, DDT was very effective in combating vector-borne diseases such as malaria and typhus, but was banned by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in June, 1972, from general use in the United States.
