This 1981 photograph was captured, during the cleanup efforts implemented in response to the environmental tragedy historically referred to as the Love Canal disaster, after toxic waste was detected in a New York neighborhood called Love Canal, in 1978. A State of Emergency was declared, and subsequently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), participated in a cytotoxicity study on local residents, while engaging in a Superfund cleanup operation.
