This 1981 photograph depicts some of the devastation caused by the 1980 Mount St. Helens volcanic eruption in southwestern Washington state. A surveillance program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was inaugurated, in order to monitor the effects of the eruption on some four million residents in a surrounding four-state region.
