This image depicts a lateral view of a Norway rat, Rattus norvegicus, also known as the brown rat, house rat, and sewer rat. Largest of the domestic rodents, the Norway rat is very common in cities, and rural areas of most states. It nests mostly in burrows in the ground, and usually close to human habitation. The Norway rat is known to be a reservoir of bubonic plague, caused by the bacterium, Yersinia pestis.
