This image shows a lateral view of a roof rat, or black rat, Rattus rattus, a carrier of the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis. The roof rat can be differentiated from the Norway rat, by its smaller size. Its body is generally 6-8in (16-20cm) in length, with a 7-10in (19-25cm) tail. It is a climber, and nests largely in buildings and trees.
