Caption:
This 2003 photograph depicts a number of penned cattle, which had undergone an inspection, performed by the Food Safety Inspection Service, (FSIS) prior to their slaughter, for signs of central nervous system disorders. The FSIS is a Federal Governmental agency, whose parent department, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), also oversees the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). APHIS leads an ongoing, comprehensive interagency surveillance program for BSE in the U.S. to ensure the health of America's cattle herd.
